September: Important days, events and festivals

September is the ninth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the third of four months to have a length of 30 days, and the fourth of five months to have a length of less than 31 days. The original name of the month is Septem from Roman Calender means seven in Latin. 1 September – National Nutrition Week

National Nutrition Week is conducted every year from 1-7 September to provide knowledge among people about the importance of nutrition for better health.

2 September – Victory over Japan Day or V-J Day

This is the day when Fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would.” Jubilant Americans declared August 14 “Victory over Japan Day,” or “V-J Day.”

2 September – World Coconut Day

It is observed by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) to emphasise on the importance of the fruit in poverty reduction.

22 August – September 2, 2020 – Onam Festival

People across the state Kerala celebrate Onam festival with joy as it is the harvesting festival and marks the homecoming of mythical King Mahabali.

3 September – Skyscraper Day

Skyscraper day is observed to acknowledge the architectural and engineering tricks that make such buildings possible today. Skyscraper Day is celebrated on Louis H. Sullivan’s birthday (1856), the architect credited with the first skyscrapers.

5 September – International Day of Charity

International Day of Charity is observed on 5 September every year to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions to achieve sustainable development goals.

5 September – Teachers’ Day (India)

Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated on 5 September every year to mark the birth anniversary of India’s second President Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.

7 September – Brazilian Independence Day

The Independence Day of Brazil, commonly called Sete de Setembro, is a national holiday observed in Brazil on 7 September of every year. The date celebrates Brazil’s Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves on 7 September 1822.

8 September – International Literacy Day

Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Celebrations take place in several countries.

10 September – World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD)

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), on 10 September, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and co-sponsored by WHO.

14 September – World First Aid Day

World First Aid Day is observed on 14 September to raise awareness among public about how first aid can save lives in case of crises. According to the International Federation, first aid should be accessible to all people and should be an important part of the developmental societies.

14 September – Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14 September as on this day the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devanagri script in 1949 as the official language of the Republic of India.

15 September – Engineer’s Day (India)

Every year, the country celebrates September 15 as National Engineer’s Day to appreciate the contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The Bharat Ratna awardee, Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861 in a village called Muddenahalli in Karnataka.

15 September – International Day of Democracy

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy—with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy.

16 September – Malaysia Day

Malaysia Day is celebrated on 16 September and is also known as ‘Hari Malaysia’. On 16 September, 1963, the former British colony of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya to generate the Malaysian Federation.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers, of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.

21 September – International Day of Peace (UN)

International Day of Peace (UN) is observed on 21 September around the world. For the first time it was observed in September 1982 and in 2001, the General Assembly adopted a resolution 55/282, which established 21 September as International Day of Peace of non-violence and cease fire.

21 September – World Alzheimer’s Day

World Alzheimer’s Day helps in raising awareness among people about the challenges faced by the due to dementia. In 2012, World Alzheimer’s Month was launched.

22 September – Rose Day (Welfare of Cancer patients)

Rose Day is observed on 21 September for the welfare of cancer patients or we can say that this day marks the hope for cancer patients that cancer is curable.

24th Speptember – World Maritime Day 2020

World Maritime Day is observed on 24 September to raise awareness about the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to showcase the work that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its Member States are undertaking to achieve the targets.

26 September – European Day of Languages

European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26 September annually to promote awareness among the public about the importance of language learning and protecting the heritage of the language.

26 September – World Contraception Day

World Contraception Day is observed on 26 September annually. It is a global campaign to improve the awareness about the contraceptive methods available and enable the young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

Starts last week of September and ends on last Sunday of September – Day of Deaf

Day of Deaf or International Week of Deaf starts on the last week of September and ends on the last Sunday of the month. It is also known as World Day of Deaf. This day draw attention not only to the affected person but also to the general people, politicians and development authorities towards the achievements and challenges faced by the community of the deaf people.

27 September – World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September, with celebrations led by UNWTO. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the global community of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and the contribution the sector can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.

28 September – World Rabies Day

World Rabies Day is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the United States.

29 September – World Heart Day

This day informs people about the heart disease and stroke which is the world’s leading cause of death.

30 September – International Translation Day

The United Nations observes International Translation Day on 30 September every year. International Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security.
