10 ways to improve your writing skills.

1. Know your audience

Analyzing your audience will help you discover information that you can use to build a bond between you and your audience. Creating a reader image is the first step in your mind, and the selection of format, style, tone, layout, and vocabulary largely depends on who the audience is.

Create a checklist for the audience by analyzing:

  1. What does the reader want to read?
  2. Why he/she is visiting to read it?
  3. When do they mosts visit?
  4. Where do they see posts mostly?
  5. What’s the size of the group I am targeting?

Knowing all of this will help you:

  • Come up with an accurate list of topics.
  • Set up your blog to convert more effectively.
  • Create a great user-friendly experience.
  • Optimize your content with an accurate keywords to target.

2. Organize your Writing Idea

Organizing your writing is as important as your content. The audience usually spends 15 sec or less before deciding to stay or move on. Users will remain if they quickly scan and found content is relevant.

Here is a Method to organize writing skills:

1. Chronologically

  • To explain the history of a topic
  • To share an experience
  • To explain how to do something
  • To explain step by step process.

2. Order of Importance

  • Persuading and convincing
  • Ranking items by their importance
  • Illustrating a problem and solution

3. Spatial Order

  • Visualise your reader as what you want them to see.
  • Evoking a scene using the senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound)
  • Writing a descriptive essay

words to include when using spatial order: above, alongside, behind, beneath, beyond down, farther along, in back, in front, to the south, to the east, and so on, a few yards away near or nearby, on top of, to the left or right of, under and up, and more.

3. Concise Writing

The conciseness in writing is about expressing your idea most concisely, maintaining clarity by avoiding unnecessary detail. It should include only the details that are necessary to communicate your point.
For example, if you are trying to persuade someone to buy something, you want to present your information in the clearest way possible.

To Write More Concisely, Follow these guidelines:

  • Write what you mean.
  • Trust yourself as a writer.
  • Review and study your sentence if the first draft.
  • Read each paragraph aloud to make sure content is connected to the audience.
  • Cut out extra words, unnecessary phrases and redundancies, weak qualifiers, negative constructions, and unnecessary “to be” verbs.

4. Make it grammatically correct

To improve your writing skills, it is extremely important to follow the basic rules of grammar. You don’t have to know every single rule of English grammar, but you should be aware of the basics, at least. Even in informal writing, grammar and punctuation are important in expressing your point.

Basic grammar rules to follow:

  • Avoid passive voice.
  • Try to avoid split infinitives.
  • Use Commas and semi-colons when required.
  • Be sure all sentences have parallel construction.
  • Avoid Spelling mistakes

5. Review and Edit

There is always scope for reviewing and editing your work before presenting it to the readers. In the end, always check your work, reread it, and make sure the same the message is conveying as you want to write.

Use the following tips to help you editing your Writing:

  • Cut long sentences in two.
  • Reduce prepositions.
  • Make your verbs stronger.
  • Eliminate Filler Words.
  • Go for peer review.
  • Outline, edit, simplify.

6. Give examples

Adding an example in writing will support your idea. A visual image will be created if you give an example while writing; it will make the word memorable; it shouldn’t be too long. Moreover, the reader will be able to grab the concept in a much quicker and better way.

How can one include examples in the text?

  • Integrating them in paragraph
  • Using illustrations
  • Cause and effect

7. BE VIVID

“Developing a paragraph through description is painting a verbal picture” –  Esther Baraceros.

Vivid is bright, intense, or full of life. Example: the imagination of a child. Similes, Metaphors, Personification, and Imagery will allow the reader to engage their senses, allowing readers to step into your scene in their minds.

Checklist for Descriptive Writing:

  • A paragraph begins with a topic sentence.
  • Rest of the section, the topic sentence supported?
  • Follow the logical pattern in organizing the sentence.
  • Is your paragraph cohesive?

8. Stick to one voice

You must speak with one voice to get their message across. Try to stick to the “I” or “you” voice throughout writing. Sometimes it’s necessary to use both, but don’t move back and forth; your readers will get lost.

To achieve the sound of one voice, read these tips:-

  • Tone: Decide on a tone that will connect correctly with the audience.
  • Person: using first, second, or the third person correctly.
  • Role: Determine which role the speaker is playing (colleague, an expert, a teacher, or a narrator).

9. Choosing Specific, Appropriate Words

Word choice is an important part of any writing. Selecting precise words will increase the impact on your audience.

Follow this Checklist for appropriate word choice:

  • Avoid slang.
  • Use specific words rather than overly general words.
  • Avoid over casual language.
  • Be careful while using homophones.

10. Feedback

It helps to know about your progress towards your writing goals and what else improvement you need. You can either ask your peer that fits your target to read your piece of writing or encourage readers to share their responses or thoughts in the comment section and, in the last, write every day, and keep improving from your feedback.
